Malá Buková – coloured rocks
Black basalt, ochre quartz sandstone and white calcareous sandstone. The rocks on Malá Buková will surprise you with their colours.
What will you see? Basalt rock outcrop, rocks of quartz and calcareous sandstone ... The core of Malá Buková is formed of volcanic basalt rock. In the top part, basalt reaches the Earth’s surface in the form of small outcrops with columnar jointing. They were formed at a time when red-hot basalt magma cooled down and contracted. Nearby is a distinct rock formed of ochre quartz sandstone. Not far from it, a white rock soars skywards. It is also formed of sandstone, only strongly calcareous, with small preserved fossils.
