Držník – what is hidden in the pond’s dam?
Somewhere between Držník Pond and Hradčany once was an iron ore smelter. Slag (the remains of iron smelting) can still be found in the pond’s dam.
What will you see? The largest pond from the system of Hradčany ponds, a slag heap, a memorable tree – “Hradčany pine” ... Držník Pond is located in the Hradčany Ponds nature reserve, with outstanding water and peat bog communities of plants and animals. The local flora includes the critically endangered brook grass and heath spotted orchid. Other protected plants include calla, marsh Labrador tea and round-leaved sundew. With regard to the local fauna, you can sometimes see the black stork and nearly 700 species of butterflies. Another attraction is hidden in the dam – the remnants of a slag heap from an iron smelter that existed here until 1768.
